On July 25th 2007, after only 8 months on Lansdowne Ave, the building was sold to a buyer in Nova Scotia, as for us, we really don't know at this time, but we have invested alot ofmoney into our young youth center. We have opened our Youth Food Bank, and we have started a new program aimed at homeless youth. We have done more in eight months than in our five years in both this location meaning North End and the building which we have rented.
Also during the month of July, some kids broke into our youth center. We contacted police to look into the matter, nothing was taken from the center due to a dog barking, which scared these people out of our building. We did have alot of damage, we had our bathroom sink on the floor, water damage on our phone center rug, and our main door window broken into many pieces. As for the police, we have heard no word as of yet on who broke into the building.
Youth Food Bank as of July 25th of 2007, we have given away 613 bags of food to the more needy youth of our community, we have passed out six boxes of both food and cleaning to the homeless youth of our community. This is our newest project and we plan to post many poster in the up town area so that those youth who are on the streets will see and come in for both food and cleaning supplies.
With this building sold our future is now hard to see through these windows, when it comes to this building. Our hopes is that the new landlord will also have a great heart like our past landlord, our building itself needs alot of work done to it, and we hope that the work that is due to be done, gets done. This is only a building, our vision and hopes for a better life for the homeless will not disappear if we are to leave this location, we moved here and we have done alot of work, our work will always continue no matter where we are located.
COLD CALLS COST US MANY STUDENTS
We the Federation must depend on our fundraising efforts to keep our center going, when we were incorporated back in 1996, there were two very important part of this incorporation, one to offer services to the youth community which we have been and to help create work within the youth community, which we have, but we can not hold on to a youth staff in the phone center due to the cold calls part of our campaign, we created the craft center so that our cold calls would go well for the young people in here, but some people can be very rude to these youth when they call them to see if they would like to purchase the craft for the month, which money raise would be used for the following:
Rent of Center $600.00
Lights $200.00
Phones $600.00
Food Purchase per month $2000.00
Inventory per month $1500.00
Deliveries of craft products per month $2000.00
Youth Pay Roll per month $5000.00
As you can see we must raise much money for the operation of our center, we are proud to be able to hire up to five local students to work in the phone center, helping to create work for the youth community, but after only one to three days on the cold calls, they end up quitting on us, by them quitting we are force to struggle with each month which we have been doing for years.
Fundraiser's here at the center are youth between 16 to 19 years of age, they all love working here at the center, as we treat them very well, we offer them so much more, but again once they are put on the cold calls they must raise no less than $100.00 per shift, or five sales per shift.
Our youth are not allow to force a person into a sale, they read a script, and once they are done, they wait for the answer, and 98% of the time they receive a no from the person, which we say thank you but please keep us in mind for future campaigns.
CRAFTS MADE HERE AT THE CENTRE
Our crafts which we make here at the center are quite nice, and those that received it were happy with it. For their $20.00 they allow us to keep our youth working, keep our youth food bank going and help us with the shoe box campaign for homeless youth. As the federation receive no other funding but what is raised in the phone center, if one out of every twenty people were to purchase one of our monthly craft products, our fundraiser's would not quit, we would not worry about our rent, food , lights, phones, payroll and so much more.
Youth helping Youth is and will always be our format, we love the idea that those who are working here in the center are raising money for their peers who have lost their homes, but again the cold calls is really hurting those youth who are in the phone center working so hard for this center. We hope that the community would support our vision for this center so that we can continue to offer more to the youth community. Our craft department will always create new products to be sold over the phones, but always remember 100% of that sale would allow us to continue to offer employment to youth, but more importantly feed the youth of our community.
PLEASE BE KIND TO OUR YOUTH WHO MAY CALL YOU, THEY ARE JUST DOING A JOB WHICH THEY WANT TO LIKE, BUT IF YOU ARE RUDE TO THEM, THEY FEEL BAD. BE KIND AND MAYBE WE WILL SEE THE 1 OUT OF 20 PEOPLE SAY YES TO THE CENTRE, WE PROMISE THAT ALL CRAFTS THAT ARE MADE HERE, ARE MADE HERE WITH HEART, AND PROMISE THAT THOSE WHO MAY RECEIVE IT WILL LOVE IT. |
